Page 1 of 2 You know the feeling of horror you get when your wonderful browser crashes and loses all of your work? Well this is go number two of this little introduction so hopefuly It will work this time! Why would anyone in their right mind put together a car and then go and drive it? That's what I was asked when I mentioned to a friend that I was thinking about building my own car, another just laughed as I'm sure he thinks I won't finish it or will get bored! It did make me think about exactly what was I planning to do. I know I'm not the most mechanical of people, my first experience of working on a car was in my Dad's workshop. I had to strip down and rebuild a 1.1 fiesta before I could drive it. I learnt alot, it was a simple car and I got it to run again! I currently drive an Evo V GSR, a four wheel drive, turbocharged animal. It's complicated, expensive to run but it's a hoot. Originally I never planned to sell it, it was only when I dug out my MOT that I realised I'd only done 2000 miles this year. Once I worked out how much it had cost to run and insure for the year it was really a no brainer. The Evo has to go. Which left me with a dilema, what do I replace it with? I want something interesting, it has to be quick and fun to drive. Which left me with a problem, everything in the mainstream is either boring or expensive. A friend of mine had recently bought an MK Indyblade and that got me thinking, his trackday costs fell to nearly nothing, the car is a hoot to drive and sounds amazing. It seemed to check all of my boxes. Time to find a car! So the research began, I looked on ebay and was pretty put off by what I found as a complete car, there were lots of bodges and unfinished bits that looked liket they'd take a lot of work to fix. So I decided to build one all I needed to do was find a kit I was happy with. If you ask anyone on the forums at Locost Builders they'll always recommend chosing a firm that's local to you. That left me with caterham and westfield. I looked over their price lists and decided to ignore that bit of advice! I started with a list of builders and working through pictures of chassis, my contact experience, other people's experience and reading build diaries to judge if my competency fitted I knocked manufacturers off until I was left with a choice of 2. MK and MNR. |
